Rules of the Road

In Kansas, bicycles have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicles

Ride designated bike lanes when present, otherwise ride to the right side of the roadway

Ride with the normal traffic flow

Be predictable- hold a straight line of travel, do not surprise a motorist, pedestrian, or other bicyclists

Ride single file

Obey all traffic signs and signals

Use a light at night

Yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal when passing

Bicycle Safety
  • Ride defensively- maintain a safety first attitude and use all your abilities to protect yourself
  • Wear a helmet
  • When crossing railroad tracks, ride perpendicular to the rails
  • Keep both hands on the handlebars to maintain control of your bicycle

Sharing the Road
  • Allow a minimum of 3 feet between your vehicle and a cyclist when passing
  • Look back for approaching cyclists before making turns
  • Don't cut off a bicyclist when turning right.  Be patient.
  • Check for bicyclists before exiting a parked vehicle
  • Don't harass or endanger a bicyclist- this is considered reckless endangerment by law- a misdemeanor offense

Bicycle Master Plan Information

The Bicycle Master Plan seeks to integrate bicycle use into the transportation infrastructure in a manner that will safely and efficiently accommodate cyclists.

Kansas State University and the City of Manhattan consist of a diverse and intricate collection of architecture, space, and people. This gathering is connected by a complex system of transportation infrastructure, serving 50,000+ people per day, which has been primarily designed to accommodate cars, trucks, and other motorized vehicles.

The purpose of the Master Plan is to create a structure for future development of bicycle facilities to respond to both short- and long-term needs. This "guideplan' responds to existing bicycling conditions, to future growth and development patterns, and to physical characteristics of the community
